IFMA AMATEUR RULES

IFMA is the recognized international amateur Muay Thai federation, holding World Amateur Championships and developing the sport toward Olympic inclusion. IFMA rules are the most likely first-fight rules a competitor outside Thailand will encounter.

MANDATORY PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

IFMA amateur fights require headgear, shin guards, body protectors (for some divisions), elbow pads, and groin protection. The full PPE significantly reduces injury risk and is the main reason IFMA-sanctioned amateur Muay Thai is the safest entry point into competition.

ROUND STRUCTURE

IFMA amateur bouts are typically three rounds of two minutes for younger or junior categories and three rounds of three minutes for adult senior categories. Some advanced amateur title fights extend to five rounds.

RESTRICTED WEAPONS

Elbows are restricted or padded in most IFMA amateur formats. Direct elbow strikes to the head may be entirely prohibited at junior levels. Knees are permitted but knees to the head are restricted in some divisions. The clinch is allowed but typically time-limited.

SCORING

IFMA scoring follows a 10-point must system with modifications appropriate for amateur protection. Volume and clean technique score more readily than power, since the protective equipment dampens the impact differential between fighters of different size or experience.

PATH TO SENIOR INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION

Successful amateur careers under IFMA can lead to national team representation at IFMA World Championships, regional championships, and continental qualifiers. National federations select team members through their own internal trials.
