SITMONCHAI GYM

A traditional rural camp far from the tourist circuit — boxing-heavy Muay Thai and devastating low kicks.

Sitmonchai is in Kanchanaburi province, two hours from Bangkok by van and a different country compared to the tourist camps in Phuket. The setting is rural — actual Thai countryside, not a resort area — and the camp is small, with maybe a dozen Thai fighters in residence and a handful of foreign students at any given time. Don't go expecting amenities. Go expecting Muay Thai.

The Sitmonchai style is distinct. Where most Thai gyms emphasize the kicking-and-clinching template, Sitmonchai is famous for boxing-heavy combinations and brutal low kicks — closer in approach to what was historically called Muay Mat (the heavy-handed style). Pornsanae Sitmonchai, the camp's most internationally known fighter, embodied this style with a low-kick game that opponents described as feeling like baseball bats. Foreign students who train here come specifically for that style of Muay Thai.

The authenticity is real but the trade-offs are real too. Accommodation is basic, the language barrier is significant (limited English), the food is rural Thai and may take adjustment, and you'll be alone with your training in a way that's harder than at a social-tourist camp. Students who thrive at Sitmonchai are usually intermediate-or-better, somewhat introverted, and willing to live cheaply and quietly for the duration of their stay.

For anyone tired of feeling like a tourist at the bigger camps and wanting a real Thai countryside training experience, Sitmonchai is one of the best options that still welcomes foreign students.
